Final Assessments

Based on the communication sent on 20 April 2020 from our Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), John Morrow, this guide provides assistance in the development, design and delivery of Final Assessments.

Canvas Course Shell will be used by teachers to create Final Assessments this semester.

To maximise the security of Final Assessments and to limit the risk of their visibility in the upcoming weeks, all courses have been allocated a new Course Shell where Quizzes and Assignments can be created and stored before the Final Assessment.

Teachers will need to submit their assessments for review by the Examination Office two (2) weeks before the date of the Final Assessments.

The relevant Quizzes and Assignments will be transferred into standard Canvas course by the Examination Office and teachers will be informed one (1) day before the Final Assessment. Teachers will then need to do a final check and publish the assessment prior to the 1pm NZST start.

About the 24-hour Final Assessments

Semester One examinations will be replaced by Final Assessments timetabled for a specific dayAll components or sections of the Assessment must be available online to students for the full 24-hour period, commencing at 1pm NZST.

Final Assessments will be equivalent to Exams and designed as a summative assessment to be completed in the same time period (typically 2 or 3 hours), with the usual teaching processes to prepare students.

Some key things:

  • Reflect on the additional demands of working online and the creation of questions that limit the amount students can actually do within the 24-hour period.
  • Some students might need to complete two Final Assessments in one day.
  • Avoid tasks with research expectations that will exceed the time frame. Students have been informed that the assessments can be complete it within 2 or 3 hours (depending on the scheduled length of the Examination which it has replaced).
  • There is an expectation that examiners will be available during the working hours of the Final Assessment.
    • The Student Contact Centre will be the first port of call for any queries during Final Assessments. The centre will triage students’ enquiries and will be open until 10pm NZST.
  • If examiners have made any corrections to the assessments during the 24 hours, students will need to be notified by a Canvas Announcement. You may want to remind students to turn their Canvas notifications on during this period.
Students instructions to be included for Final Assessments
Final assessment instructions to students need to be clear and include the following information:
  • This Final Assessment has been designed so that a well-prepared student could complete it within 2 or 3 hours (depending on the scheduled length of the Examination which it has replaced)
  • If any corrections are made during the 24 hours, you will be notified by a Canvas Announcement. Please ensure your notifications are turned on during this period.
  • It is your responsibility to ensure your assessment is successfully submitted on time. Please don’t leave it to the last minute to submit your assessment.
